Cambridge is bordered by the towns of Watertown and Belmont on the West, the towns of Arlington and Somerville on the North, and occupies a land area of 6.26 square miles. Cambridge Common - Mass Ave. and Garden Street For nearly 350 years, this was the site of historic events -- political, religious and social. Freedom of speech was declared here in 1637; freedom of religion in 1740. On this site, George Washington took command of the First Continental Army in 1775.
Christ Church - Zero Garden St. 617-876-0200 This is the oldest church in the city and housed the first non-Puritan congregation.

Fort Washington Waverly Street In 1855, this fort, built to protect the Continental Forces in Cambridge during the siege of Boston, was turned into a city park.
Hooper-Lee-Nichols House - 159 Brattle St. 617- 547-4252 Built circa 1685, the original rooms of this house are the oldest in Cambridge. The house serves as the headquarters of the Cambridge Historical Society.
Longfellow National Historic Site - 105 Brattle St. 617-876-4491 Built in 1759, this home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow sits on what was once called Tory Row (present day Brattle Street).
Old Burying Ground - Zero Garden St. The oldest cemetery in Massachusetts, interred here are eight presidents of Harvard, two black patriot soldiers of the American Revolution and many colonial settlers.

![]() Harvard University There is always a live performance at Harvard, whether it is classical, folk, jazz, dance, theater or poetry readings. The Hasty Pudding Club is well known, of course, but the individual houses also offer drama productions. Concerts are given everywhere, from the houses of Sanders Theater in Historic Memorial Hall and The Music Department's own Paine Hall 617- 495-2791. Harvard's Gilbert and Sullivan shows in the Agassiz Theater (Radcliffe) are a time-honored tradition.

Harvard Yard In Harvard Square. Originally the yard of a farm house, the "Yard" remains the center of Harvard University's campus. Eighteenth-century buildings include Massachusetts Hall, Hollis Hall, and Holden Chapel. A statue of John Harvard sits in front of University Hall designed by Charles Bullfinch. The Widener Library is one of the largest university libraries in the world with more than eight million books.

![]() SCHOOLS The University City – An Overview Harvard, America's oldest university, was established in 1636 six years after the city itself was founded. Cambridge is also home of Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard University), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lesley University, Cambridge College and The Longy School of Music. Nearly one-fourth of its residents are students - 20,000 arrive here annually -- and over one in six of all jobs in the city are in these institutions.
Child Care And Preschool
The Department of Human Service Programs Childcare Division manages for Preschool Childcare Programs for children ages 2.9-5 years (not yet in kindergarten) and eight School-Age Childcare Programs for children in kindergarten through 6th grades. Group sizes range from 16 in Preschool to 26 in School-Age. Programs are located either in the elementary school or in a nearby facility. Enrollment is ongoing. Many Programs have wait lists: families are encouraged to seek enrollment well in advance of the anticipated start date.

Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Harvard University was named after it’s first benefactor, John Harvard. Originally, the college primarily trained Congregationalist and Unitarian clergy. Following the Civil War, Harvard’s President, Charles W. Eliot transformed the college into a centralized research university. The undergraduate college became coeducational in 1977. ![]() EVENTS Head Of The Charles Regatta Held in October, the Regatta is by far the largest and most colorful event held in Cambridge. The racing consists of 16 events (men's and women's) seven single, nine crew -- along a three mile course on the Charles River beginning at the Boston University Boathouse, (next to the Hyatt Regency) passing through Cambridge, ending at Herter Park on Soldiers Field Road, Boston. Over 4,500 male and female rowers, youth collegiate, master and veteran age groupings, representing more than 300 clubs colleges and universities worldwide; entries in the past have come from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Norway, Russia, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, South America, Japan, Croatia and Canada. More than 250,000 spectators are expected, Best viewing spots Anderson Bridge (Harvard Sq.), Weeks Footbridge, and Eliot Bridge. Use the MBTA's Red Line to Harvard Square or Green Line to Boston University's stop. There is an exposition held at Magazine Beach, Cambridge and is Free and opened to the public. Free Shuttle buses along the course.
Octoberfest: Held Columbus Day Weekend Harvard Square's annual autumn celebration featuring food, German dancing, crafts, clothing, jugglers, kids rides, and a host of activities for the entire family. And of course BEER (non-alcoholic).

![]() TRANSPORTATION Cambridge is situated in the Greater Boston Area, which has excellent rail, air, and highway facilities. State Route 128 and Interstate Route 495 divide the region into inner and outer zones which are connected by numerous "spokes" providing direct access to the airport. port and intermodal facilities of Boston.
Bikeways And Multiuse Paths Although designated as bicycle facilities, bike paths such as the Minuteman Commuter Bike way and the Paul Dudley White Bike Path Serve a Variety of users: walkers, skaters, joggers, tricyclists, etc. The path around Fresh Pond is also a multiuse path.
Major Highways Principal highways are State Routes 2, 2A, 16, and 38 and U.S. Route 3. The Massachusetts Turnpike runs just south of Cambridge and is easily accessible at the Allston-Brighton interchange.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) - 800-392-6100 . MBTA Passes Monthly T Passes are available for the bus, subway, and commuter rail. The cost is equivalent to about 16 round-trip fares a month. T passes can be ordered by phone at 617-222-3200 and charge to MasterCard or Visa. An automatic renewal option is available. In Cambridge you can buy T passes at the Alewife T Station; Harvard Square T Station; One Kendall Square; and elsewhere.
Commuter Rail Commuter rail service available at Porter Square (10 min. to Boston; no MBTA parking). MBTA Red Line service available at Kendall Square (4 min. to Park St.), Central Square, Harvard Square (11 min.), Porter Square, and Alewife (18 min. from Park Street; 2,209 MBTA parking spaces at Alewife). Green Line service available at Lechmere (8min. to Government Center; 323 MBTA Parking spaces). One can also access the Blue Line via the Green and Orange lines and ride to Logan Airport. Exact change or a subway token is required. The subway costs $1.25. The Springfield Terminal Railway (508-663-1073) provides freight service. TRANSPORTATION Bikes On The "T" You can take your bike on the Red, Blue, and Orange lines after 8:00P PM on weekdays, on Saturdays before 8:30 AM AND after 8:00 PM, and all day on Sunday, with some exceptions and restrictions. You can also take your bike on the commuter rail - a neat way to bicycle in the country. To take your bike on the "T" you need a photo ID permit, which costs $5 and is good for 4 years. The following classes are offered; swim instruction for adults and children, gymnastics, tennis for adults and children, aquatic exercise, masters swim, and volleyball clinics. The children's program serves 18 mo. and up depending on the activity. All children's programs meet on Saturday.
